Madeline Kimei smiles as she lifts her face up to the sun. It is climbing over 35 degrees Celsius in Beijing and people are complaining about the scorching weather. But the Tanzanian advocate, who is the managing director of Resolution Experts, a dispute resolution service firm in Dar es Salaam, soaks up the heat with pleasure. “We love the sun,” says the young mother who has left her toddler in the care of his grandmother while she enjoys the hospitality of the Chinese capital for a month.

Kimei is not alone. About 25 fellow African legal professionals like her have also been staying in Beijing to study Chinese laws and the legal system and take the knowledge back home for wider dissemination.

Just as good fences make good neighbors, so do good laws make good trade partners. Since 2009, China has been Africa’s single largest partner. Bilateral trade has been steadily increasing each year, crossing the $200-billion mark in 2013. Along with trade, Chinese investment in Africa has also increased proportionately, along with government assistance and people-to-people contacts.
